Print size 14.7 x 7.0 cm, paper size 18.9 x 11.5 cm. Linocut and monoprint, hand burnished on Tosa Shi 54gsm, edition of 50.

The first print in a series exploring the ideas of perceived permanence and the fragile nature of memory. Pentre Ifan, depicted here, has been in place for over 5000 years. It's 16 tonne capstone delicately balanced on the points of the upright stones, creating an eerie appearance of weightlessness from some angles.

The remains of these ancient burial chambers we see today are only the stone bones of once great earthen mounds, and the ideas and beliefs that informed their creation are long forgotten. I wanted to play with this idea of fading memory by depicting the remaining stones by their absence. Pentre Ifan's true purpose is still a source of speculation. No human remains have been found beneath it and some believe it was not a chambered tomb but left uncovered to act as a landmark.

By the nature of monoprints, each print is slightly different. The clouds and shadows subtly change across the edition, capturing the essence of time passing.

In this series I'm aiming to create images that appear to have the delicateness of charcoal drawings but with the permanence of ink, again questioning the idea of what we perceive to be permanent.
